The secret behind a beautiful orchid

Healthy roots are the secret behind a beautiful orchid. Orchids breathe through their roots as well in planters as in nature. This is the reason why the roots of the orchid sometimes grow outside the planters, so don’t cut these off! If the roots are green the orchid needs no water, if the roots are white or have a grey hue the plant needs water.

Why are orchids in transparent breeding pots?

You might have noticed that orchids are usually sold in a transparent planter. This way you can easily see if the roots are healthy and are not suffocating or rotting. Our advice is that the plants are kept in the breeding pots and not repot them. In the transparent pots the health of the plant and especially the roots can be monitored properly. Furthermore an orchid has more flowers when the plant is fitted tightly in the planter.

What is the ideal planter for orchids?

A healthy and full orchid is grown by leaving the orchid in the breeding pot. When you are looking for a nice planter for your orchid it is important that the planter is the right size. Orchid in the planter, this is how you take care of the plant

Orchid sometimes have the reputation of being a difficult plant to keep well maintained, this isn’t true! The maintenance of the orchid is simple if you follow these few instructions.

Don’t give the plant too much water Too much water will cause rotting of the roots of the plant. Therefore give the orchid water every 8 to 10 days and check the health of the roots.

Spray the orchid with water Preferably use lime-free water and avoid spraying the heart of the leaves.

Submerge the clod of the orchid in water let your orchid bathe in water about half an hour each week. This way you prevent there will be a bottom of water in the planter if you let the clod dry properly.

Place the orchid in a light surrounding with little draft An orchid doesn’t flourish in a too sunny or too warm spot. It is important that the plant receives enough light and that it is located in an airy and not too dry surrounding.

Don’t throw out the orchid too quickly Sometimes the orchid seems to be dead or dying but the plant has simply bloomed. Remove the flowerheads which have bloomed and take care of the plant with water patience and a little love. Often the orchid will flower again after a while.

It is best to repot an orchid when the roots start growing out of the pot or the substrate becomes less airy. By transplanting the plant on time, the roots remain healthy and the orchid gets sufficient room to continue growing. This is usually done once every 1 to 2 years, preferably after flowering.

Carefully remove the orchid from the old flowerpot and remove any damaged or dry roots. Then, place the plant in a new orchid pot with airy orchid potting mix or a bark-based substrate. Always choose a plant pot with good drainage so that excess water can drain away properly and the roots remain healthy.

A potted orchid loves plenty of indirect light and moderate watering. Water the houseplant about once a week and prevent water from pooling in the decorative pot or at the bottom of the flowerpot. Additionally, a warm room helps keep the orchid healthy and encourage it to bloom again.

A good orchid pot has sufficient drainage and room for air around the roots. Many orchids are kept in a transparent nursery pot so that you can easily check whether the roots remain healthy and do not rot. Additionally, orchids often bloom better when they are slightly more cramped in the pot. Therefore, it is recommended to keep the transparent inner pot and combine it with a decorative pot.

A plastic inner pot is intended for the health of the orchid and usually has drainage holes. A decorative pot is ornamental and is used to neatly conceal the transparent nursery pot within the interior.
