What is engobe?

Engobe is a thin, liquid enamel that consists of clay. It has a light shiny effect but it look totally different than any other enamel layers. It gives the finish a matte effect which accentuates the craft and the natural characteristics of the planters. Ultimately it is a matte clay colour. There are many different colour pigments that can be added to engobe. This is why we have multiple colours of ceramic planters in our assortment.

Creating ceramic planters is a craft

As mentioned ceramic planters are made of clay, a natural product. To turn clay into a stone-like material the material needs to be worked, shaped, dried and baked. This traditional production process is followed by the craftsmen of Portugal. The planters are baked at temperatures going up to 1020 degrees Celsius. Sometimes the temperatures in the ovens might differ. This creates slightly different planters which makes every planter unique!
